New Years Organization and Rotating Collections

I read something the other day that recommended rotating your sheets by putting the sheets you’ve just washed under the previously washed sheets in your linen closet. That way you aren’t using the same sheets over and over again, wearing them out. Do you do that?

Oddly enough I do rotate my towels and my kitchen dishes like that. They all match and I don’t mind using them all equally. With sheets though I tend to use the same ones over and over until they wear out. They match our bedroom better than our other sheets. And if I take them from the dryer and put them back on the bed I don’t have to fold them and put them away!

One of the organizational books I’ve read said to take your clean dishes and silverware from the dishwasher and set the table with them. If you only use plates and never use bowls this might work for you. And it would save you the trouble of putting the dishes away. At my house we’d end up with the wrong dishes for the meal. We use bowls and plates about equally, but not at the same meal.

I’m not getting carried away with organization this New Year. But  one tip I read about  I am going to try. Later this afternoon I’m going to turn all of the hangers in my closet around. Then when I wear that item I’ll turn the hanger back to normal. At the end of 2012 it will be obvious if I haven’t worn an item since January 12, 2012. Then I’ll get rid of it.  Of course the link says to get rid of things at the end of June…

Do you have any organizational goals your working on for 2012?

  1. I do rotate towels like that. We currently only have one set of sheets for our bed, but I do rotate pillow cases sometimes.

I like the hanger idea! I might have to give that a try.

    1. I thought I was the only one who rotated towels! Let me know if you try flipping your hangers, it seems like an easy way to figure out what clothes we don’t wear.

  2. We rotate our towels too! We also make it a point to go through a lot of our possessions once a year and get rid of things that we forgot we had, or that no longer have any emotional value. It saves a ton of space!

    1. Going through things regularly seems to be the key to reducing clutter.

  3. I’m the type who takes the sheets right out of the dryer and puts them back on the bed 🙂 We do have a backup set, but I just use them until it’s time to buy new.
I’ve heard of the hanger idea before…love it! I have a set number of hangers and won’t buy new ones. So if I buy a new garment, I get rid of an old one. Your hanger idea would make it easy to see what to get rid of first!

    1. I’ve never been able to get rid of a shirt just because I’ve bought a new one…but I’m not buying anymore hangers so this should help me out.

I really like the idea of rotating sheets and towels — thanks!
